What is Pole?

Even though its mainly referred to as Pole Dance, the term is evolving, and Pole is more commonly referred to as Pole Fitness or Pole Sport. Pole can combine dance and acrobatics centered on a vertical pole. This performance art form is now a mainstream form of fitness, practiced in gyms and dedicated dance studios such as TRIX DXB. Pole enthusiasts are of all ages; although many who perform this dance and acrobatic form are adults, that does include younger children from learning and performing in competitions. Amateur and professional pole competitions are held in countries around the world.

Pole requires significant muscular endurance, coordination, strength, flexibility, upper body, and core stability. As such, proper instruction and rigorous training are necessary to attain proficiency. Since the mid-2000s, promoters of pole dance fitness competitions have tried to change peoples’ perception of pole dance to include pole fitness as a non-sexual form of dance and acrobatics and are trying to move pole into the Olympics as pole sports.

We want to mention that many disciplines can be involved when discussing “Pole.” Let’s differentiate them:

Pole Fitness/Pole Sport/Pole Gym

This is the most acrobatic and the base of all Pole. When talking about Pole Fitness, we refer to the training and learning of all the moves/tricks that can be done on and around the pole. This includes walking around it, spinning, climbing, and performing inverts. It’s usually trained in shorts, a top, and bare feet.

Pole Dance

That’s how everyone knows it, but as a difference, pole dance is usually done on heels. It involves dancing moves around the pole, and it is usually choreographed. Variations of Pole Dance could be Contemporary Pole, Exotic Pole, and more.

We know pole can be intimidating, and we want to make it as simple and comfortable as possible. Many people need to improve their body strength when they start doing pole, and the whole purpose is to develop it in a safe environment.

Anyone can start pole at any age and with any body composition. We only need to be aware of our limitations until we develop body strength and muscle memory to continue developing our skills.

Pole can help with weight loss only if accompanied by a healthy diet and aerobic exercise. Pole will mainly develop your upper body and core strength but also work on the legs and glutes.
